How to Build a Gate for a Wooden Fence

Turning Basic Materials into a Fence

A driveway gate can be made simply and robustly from a wood or wrought iron structure that can be opened manually or even automatically depending on your budget. No matter what it is made of, it will have a few common things which are essential parts of the gate’s operation. Remember not to leave any spacing or gaps in between the planks when laying them side by side because they will eventually shrink and gaps will appear overtime as it dry’s out.

What You Need:

  • Wooden fence planks
  • 2′-by-4′ lumber
  • Gate hinges
  • Gate latch
  • Drill
  • Screws

  1. First thing that you need to do is to measure the opening that needs to be gated and lay down enough fence planks near the opening area.
  2. Next, cut the 2′-by-4’s accordingly to the desired size and lay them in a Z pattern over the fence planks so that the upper and lower legs of the Z are at least 20 to 30 cms off the top and bottom of the planks.
  3. Then, flip the entire assembly over or re-assemble them to allow the planks to be on top of the Z while the Z is on the ground.
  4. After that, you need to screw the planks onto the Z bracing by using at least two screws per plank and per brace. Always ensure that they are well secured.
  5. Next, cut the gate accordingly with the exact width and then, shape the top (optional).
  6. Finally, you have to install the hinges to enable the gate to be hanged before you proceed with the installation of the gate latch.
  7. Remember to place the hinges where it can grab the most wood to make it sturdy and then use pilot holes to ensure the hinge screws are being placed in the right position.

If you are building a gate that is over 1.5m in length then the above method is not applicable in terms of the hinge installation.
